St. John in the Wilderness Church is an Anglican church. In year 1844, this church was established. St. John's Church in Nainital is one of the most beautiful. It is one of the most tranquil places in the town of Nainital. In year 1844, Bishop of Calcutta, Daniel Wilson, had come on a visit to lay the foundation of the church. After he fell ill and he had to rest in an imperfect house near the forest. After this the church was named as St. John in the Wilderness Church.
St. John Church was built in neo-Gothic architecture and it is known for its Belgian stained-glass windows donated by Lady Elgin (Mary Louisa Lambton), wife of Lord Elgin. The churchyard of this Church is the final resting place of Lord Elgin, who served as Governor General of the Province of Canada. Its beautiful interiors and exquisite and unique Stained Glass work on all windows are attract many visitors.
St. John's Church is situated on the northern end of Mallital and about 1.5 km from the Nanda Devi Temple and close to the High Court of Uttarakhand.
