Lord Elgin's Memorial or St. John's in Wilderness Church is one of the best and religious attraction in Dharamshala. It is the memorial of the 8 Viceroy of India, Lord Elgin.
The Design of Lord Elgin’s Memorial
It is built in the Gothic style and goes perfectly with the Deodar trees that surround. It is a sophisticated piece of architecture. The building has the tall tapering windows with stained glass paintings that depict the meeting of John the Baptist with Jesus. The Deodar, pine and firs trees, surrounding the memorial give it a perfect scenic beauty.
In this church there is a small compound and also houses a memorial to Lord Elgin, the eighth Viceroy of India.Lord Elgin like to walk-down from Forsytheganj to McCleodganj.
History
Scotland was the birthplace of Lord Elgin. The Lakes and Mountains held to him an infinite promise, and when he died, he asked that he be buried here, he desired to be buried near the church after his death. In 1863, His wise Lady Elgin kept up his wish and he was buried here and built a memorial.
